Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class — Holidays in the Czech Republic Series at CzechClass101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Czech holidays and observances. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Lesson 13, Mother's Day—Den matek.
Every year in the spring, Czechs celebrate Mother's Day. This holiday came back into the consciousness of the Czechs slowly in 1989, after the fall of the communist regime or komunistický režim. Previously, it was completely overshadowed by International Women's Day, which is celebrated on March 8.
Now, before we get into more detail, do you know the answer to this question—
Do you know on which day Mother’s Day falls in the Czech Republic?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening.
In the Czech Republic every mother or matka can look forward to this holiday. On this day, she can expect to be pampered by men, especially those with whom she shares close emotional relationships: husbands, sons, grandsons, her father, and so on. It serves to recognize all the care she’s given to her children or děti, as well as to adults.
Male family members congratulate mothers, giving them flowers, kisses, cakes, and other presents or treats. They return the love which mothers dispense so freely throughout the year. Mothers are congratulated not only by their family members, but also by various social authorities.
The celebration of Mother’s Day takes place mainly in the family circle. However, in addition, they can also enjoy the presentations made by their little ones. Nurseries and primary schools like to organize shows or besídky for this day and the kids have the opportunity to show themselves to their parents in the best light.
In many communities, the school performances and shows are followed by an evening dance organized by the community to honor all mothers. Mothers send the children to bed and take over the dance floor.
Now it's time to answer our quiz question-
Do you know on which day Mother’s Day falls in the Czech Republic?
Like in many countries, it’s always celebrated every second Sunday in May.
Well listeners, how was this lesson? Did you learn something new?
