Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class — Holidays in the Czech Republic Series at CzechClass101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Czech holidays and observances. I’m Michael, and you're listening to Lesson 15, Karlovy Vary International Film Festival—Mezinárodní filmový festival Karlovy Vary.
Among the important social events of the summer in the Czech Republic is the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary. It is always held in this renowned spa town, or lázeňské město, in the first half of July.
Now, before we get into more detail, do you know the answer to this question—
What prize is given to the best film at the film festival?
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening.
The International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary is one of the oldest festivals of its kind in the world. It was first held in 1948. Later, between 1959 and 1992, it was held every other year in Moscow. Since 1993, however, it has taken place every July exclusively in Karlovy Vary.
The festival takes place in the presence of many foreign and domestic film stars, or filmové hvězdy. Every year, it also draws a large general audience or obecenstvo, which consists mainly of young people who are taking advantage of the summer vacation. Crowds of people flood the large spa colonnade and the city's movie theaters.
Participants can see many films, or filmy, from countries all over the world, take pictures with well-known stars on the colonnade, collect autographs, or podpisy, attend parties, taste the famous spa wafers, and drink the curative waters from local thermal springs.
VIP parties are held at the Hotel Thermal. Some people get adventurous and jump into the hot spring, which is located in the hotel's atrium.
Now it's time to answer our quiz question-
What prize is given to the best film at the film festival?
The prize is called the Crystal Globe or Křišťálový glóbus , and its current form is a woman standing on a globe. It is awarded in the following categories: best film, best director, best actor, and best actress. A special jury award is also given.
Well listeners, how was this lesson? Did you learn something new?
