Chigusa: Okay, let's get into the language learning strategies... Number 1 - put your learning on autopilot
Peter: So, what does that mean? It means... you don’t have to think about learning or worry about what to do. Chigusa, imagine having a bunch of learning apps and textbooks... all those icons on your home screen. All those books piled on a table.
Chigusa: I can imagine that... But Peter, where would you even start?
Peter: Great question, Chigusa. You can’t start. Most learners get stuck here. Wondering where do I start, what do I do, and how do I continue.
Chigusa: Yeah but I think textbooks have a good approach. You just follow the pages from page 1 to 2, to 3... until the end.
Peter: Exactly. You follow the pages. You know what to do. You don’t have to think about anything other than getting to the next page
Chigusa: How can you apply this to our program? How do you learn on autopilot?
Peter: So, when you sign up and set your level, we give you one clear pathway to follow. From lesson 1 to 2 to 3 until the end. All you have to do is follow it... until you’re done. So, there’s no worrying about how to start... or how to use our program.
Chigusa: Just jump in, follow the pathway and start absorbing the language.
Peter: And one advantage we have over textbooks is we focus on 7 areas of learning: reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocab, grammar and culture - in the form of video, audio, PDFs - so an integrated approach that tests every skill.
Peter: Number 2 - try harder lessons to improve faster.
Chigusa: So, listeners, if you are wondering “why try a harder lesson?”
Peter: Then think about the gym... it's a lot like working out. If you want to get bigger and stronger....
Chigusa: ...You’ll need heavier weights.
Peter: Exactly.
Chigusa: But Peter, here's a question: What if you just don’t understand anything?
Peter: You will. Our teachers break down the conversation in every lesson and we translate every word. Plus you get the transcript and translations so you can easily follow along. Remember, pushing yourself, think about a little kid. When you put a little kid with the older kids, they grow faster… learn faster, similar principle here.
Chigusa: Okay, Number 3 - Read lines from the lesson dialogue out loud, slowly.
Peter: Then re-read and increase your speed.
Chigusa: This tactic has 2 powerful benefits.
Peter: First: You read faster. Second: you speak faster.
Chigusa: Yes If you’re reading out loud... It’s kind of like speaking.
Peter: Exactly. This trains you to speak... and speak faster in general... which is something most beginners struggle with.
Chigusa: So listeners, if you’re struggling with speaking or reading...try this strategy right now.
Peter: With every lesson, you get a conversation. Read the dialogue with the Line by Line Dialogue.
Chigusa: Read out loud slowly once...
Peter: ...then re-read a bit faster, then again, and keep increasing your speed...
Chigusa: ...until you can say the lines comfortably and sound like a native.
Peter: And native speakers DO notice if you can speak and respond quickly.
Chigusa: Definitely. It’s a sign that you understand them, that you’re confident...
Peter: ...and that they don’t have to treat you like a beginner.
Chigusa: Number 4 - Test yourself with our Assessments
Peter: One of the best ways to lock the language into your memory is... to test yourself.
Chigusa: For example, if you learn a word... and later, if you try to remember it without looking at the answer....
Peter: ...that’s when you actually start to remember the word better. Testing yourself and practicing locks the language into your memory.
Chigusa: And listeners, that’s exactly why you get assessment exercises after every few lessons.
Peter: Find the assessments inside our recommended learning pathways.
Chigusa: Number 5 - Download the dialog tracks and play the dialogues on repeat
Peter: Listeners, this is a super popular immersion tactic.
Chigusa: Here’s how it works. When you’re done with a lesson, download the dialogues track.
Peter: With this, you get JUST the conversation – in your target language.
Chigusa: Then, make a playlist of the dialog tracks. Each track is usually about 10 to 30 seconds long.
Peter: Download them to your device and play them on repeat. That’s it.
Chigusa: Yes, it’s like listening to music on repeat. It gets drilled into your head...
Peter: ...except here, you’re immersing yourself in conversations..
Chigusa: Your listening skills will improve, and you’ll understand every conversation!
Chigusa: Number 6 - Learn words and phrases fast with our Spaced Repetition Flashcards.
Peter: These flashcards quiz you on words…
Chigusa: ...and space the words out so that you see them one day later, then in 2 days, then in 4 days…
Peter: ...and as a result, you'll remember them better.
Chigusa: Much better than learning a word once and hoping it sticks in your brain.
Peter: Listeners, look for the Flashcards inside the Vocabulary drop-down menu on the site.
Chigusa: And Listeners, let us know what your favorite learning strategies are. Leave us a comment.
Peter: And remember…
