Travelling to Prague

Postby jano20 » August 29th, 2016 5:17 pm

Dobrý den CzechClass101, :)

We are planning to go to Prague next year and I am currently studying with the help of the "Lessons for your Flight to the Czech Republic" learning path.

I read about Guláš on an Internet article and it wrote that it is not as spicy as the Hungarian Goulash (or Gulyás) and also about Smažený sýr, a mozzarella-like food with hranolky and tartar.

Unfortunately, I do not know what foods were in the "All about" Series' 7th lesson, because I am a free user. Because of this, I would like to know a few things about Czech cuisine, so I decided to ask you if you could help me, prosím.

Děkuji mnohokrát,

Janó

Ahoj Janó,

thank you for your question about the Czech cuisine.
As for the fried cheese, it's not mozzarella cheese, but it can be Camembert or Eidam cheese. Most often gets served with boiled potatoes and salad side dish in restaurants. As fast food they tend to sell it with fried potato chips. I prefer the restaurant type.

When you visit the Czech Republic, you will notice that most traditional meals consist of some kind of meat (duck, pork, beef, chicken) accompanied with dumplings called ''knedlíky", or potatoes ''brambory'', or rice ''rýže". Sometimes mashed potatoes.

There exist several types of ''Knedlíky'', salty ones made from potatoes, or made from flour with texture resembling roll bread. These are cut into flat slices. Other ones are sweet rounded Knedlíky filled with fruit. Some people eat them as main dish, some have them for dessert.

You can google up dishes with dumplings, such as: svíčková, vepřo-knedlo-zelo, bramborove knedliky s uzenym masem, segedínský guláš, with rice: španělský ptáček, kuře na paprice, kuřecí játra s rýží....

Here are some links in English that you can have a look at.

I hope you can find something appealing in these links. The first one are some recommendations by people who tried the dishes in particular places. I.e. restaurant Potrefena Husa, Kolkovna.

Have a great trip to the Czech Republic
Sincerely Hanka
