For Christy: Yes, all adjectives use jsem in Czech, because there is only one verb to be (být). It doesnt matter if the adjective is about permanemt quality or not permanent. I guess you ask about this base on Spanish (estar x ser).

Hi Rachel,

Thank you for your input here.

As for the adjectives, their last letters in a sentence are

decided by gender. In case of feminine, the adjective will end with, -á

Štědrá

Upřímná

In case of masculine gender, the adjective will end with,

- ý

Upřímný

Štědrý

In case of neutral gender, the adjective will end with, - é

Upřímné

Štědré

Therefore, your sentence about yourself is:

Jsem upřímná a štědrá.

You do not change the form into "štědrého" because it would be the same as saying in English: I'm "generously" and genuine.

You only want to say: I'm generous (štědrá) and genuine (upřímná) .

I hope this explains to you the difference. Best wishes with your learning and do not hesitate to ask more should you need to.

Sincerely Hanka

Jsem štědrého a upřímný.

Not sure if I was supposed to change the ending for štědrý to štědrého?

Hi Christy,

thank you for your question. Yes, you got it right!

Jsem, or já jsem is used for any of the above adjectives. The only difference in the ending of the adjectives would be in the male or female speech.

That means, if you say ''jsem nadšený" (I'm chaffed/ happy) this is male speech. The adjective will change to "jsem nadšená" for a female (,-á at the end). The same pattern applies to the rest of the adjectives.

Hope this explanation helped.

Sincerely

Hanka

Is the "I am" verb the same for permanent and temporary qualities? For instance, if I say "I am tired" and "I am kind," is it "jsem" for both? I don't know if anyone will answer this but I also don't know how else to ask, hahah.
