Díky, Anno. Jsem rad, že v Česku nemáte sněhové dny!

Hi Cindy,

the infinitive is "být chladno" (to be cold) so this "je" is a conjugated verb "být" (to be). Is it clear now? Let us know if you have other questions. We will be glad to help. Good luck with your Czech 👍.

Cheers,

Anna

Hello Glen Nekvasil,

thank you for your comment with an interesting question 👍. We don't have a word for "snow day" because it doesn't happen often that the children would not go to the school because of the snow or that everything else would be closed. As you mention the literal translation would be "sněžný den" or "sněhový den". However you would have to explain it and say something like "Kvůli sněhu děti nešly do školy, dospělí se nedostali do práce." We hope this was helpful. Let us know if you have other questions.

Cheers,

Anna

I would like to ask about the example sentence : Chlapci je chladno. I don’t understand why there is “je” here. Would you please explain the function of this je?

Thank you so much!

Best regards,

Cindy

Jak se říká česky "snow day?" That's when schools and other things don't open because there's too much snow. Asi sněžný den? That would be the word for word translation, but maybe it's idiomatic in Czech.

Hello Lizzie,

thank you for your comment. It's great that you study Czech language with us and that you are interested about life in the Czech Republic👍.

- black ice = we don't have a special expression for this, usually we say "špinavý sníh" (dirty snow)

- snow scrapers for clearing the car windshield of ice = yes, we use these, we call them "škrabky na sníh k čištění předního skla auta od ledu"

- snowshoes = sněžnice

- snow blowers = sněžná fréza

- snow rakes = hrablo na sníh

- sleet and freezing rain = sněhová přeháňka a mrznoucí déšť

We hope this is useful. Let us know if you have other questions.

Cheers,

Anna

I always find it interesting to learn how Czechs look at the world. Do you have a term for "black ice" the ice on the road that looks like wet pavement or water? Do you use snow scrapers for clearing the car windshield of ice? And do you have your own terms for snowshoes and snow blowers and snow rakes? Do you go ice fishing? And what are the words for sleet and freezing rain?

Hello Glen,

thanks for your comment. It's great that you are interested in more profound vocabulary. The snowplow in Czech is "sněžná fréza".

Let us know if you have other questions.
