Michael: Common Slang Expressions Describing Students and Teachers

Michael: This is Must-Know Czech Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 21. In this lesson, you'll learn Common Slang Expressions Describing Students and Teachers.
Michael: Czechs like to use these expressions when talking about students and teachers.

Michael: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:

Michael: Veronika, what's our first expression?
Veronika: bedna
Michael: literally meaning "box." But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "student who knows everything."

Michael: Use this slang expression when you want to describe someone very well-read and clever.
Michael : Now let's hear an example sentence.

Michael: "My classmate is very clever, he always knows the answer."

Veronika: šprt
Michael: literally meaning "nerd." But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "student who learns too mechanically."

Michael: Use this slang expression when you want to describe someone who learns mechanically. It is usually used in a negative way so be careful when you use this expression.

Michael: "Helena is a big nerd, she studies all the time."

Veronika: šplhoun
Michael: literally meaning "climber." But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "conspicuously diligent student, toady student or employee."
Veronika: [SLOW] šplhoun [NORMAL] šplhoun

Michael: Use this slang expression when you want to describe someone who is too diligent or toady. It is usually used in a negative way so be careful when you use this expression.
Michael : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Veronika: [NORMAL] Ondra je šplhoun, takže je mezi učiteli oblíbený. [SLOW] Ondra je šplhoun, takže je mezi učiteli oblíbený.
Michael: "Ondra is a bootlicker, so he's popular among teachers."

Michael: Okay, what's the last expression?
Veronika: úča
Michael: It’s a contraction of the Czech word “učitelka”, it means "female teacher."
Veronika: [SLOW] úča [NORMAL] úča

Michael: Use this slang expression when you want to refer to an unpopular female teacher as Czech students do. Be careful when you use this word, as it's impolite to call female teachers this.
