Michael: Expressions That Involve but Are Unrelated to Dogs
Michael: Hi everyone, and welcome back to CzechClass101.com. I'm Michael.

Michael: This is Must-Know Czech Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 8. In this lesson, you'll learn expressions that involve but are unrelated to dogs
Michael: Here are some more Czech slang verbs that are used on an almost daily basis.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Michael: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Veronika: být na někoho jako pes
Veronika: neštěkne po něm ani pes
Veronika: chcípnul tam pes
Veronika: kde je zakopaný pes
Michael: Veronika, what's our first expression?
Veronika: být na někoho jako pes
Michael: literally meaning "to be like a dog to someone." But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to be mean to someone."

Michael: Use this slang expression when you want to express that someone is being very mean to somebody else.

Michael: "He's very mean to her, he's still arguing with her."

Michael: Okay, what's the next expression?
Veronika: neštěkne po něm ani pes
Michael: literally meaning "not even a dog barks at him." But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "nobody remembers or cares about him."
Veronika: [SLOW] neštěkne po něm ani pes [NORMAL] neštěkne po něm ani pes

Michael: Use this slang expression when you want to express that nobody remembers someone, it is often used in connection with celebrities whose fame will end as quickly as it began, people then predict that soon not even a dog will bark at them.
Michael : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Veronika: [NORMAL] Býval známý, ale už po něm neštěkne ani pes. [SLOW] Býval známý, ale už po něm neštěkne ani pes.
Michael: "He used to be well-known, but nobody remembers him now."
Veronika: [NORMAL] Býval známý, ale už po něm neštěkne ani pes.
Michael: Okay, what's our next expression?
Veronika: chcípnul tam pes
Michael: literally meaning "the dog died there." But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "it is a forgotten place where nothing happens."
Veronika: [SLOW] chcípnul tam pes [NORMAL] chcípnul tam pes

Michael: Use this slang expression when you want to say that some place is not interesting or to describe a place where nothing happens. Be careful when you use this expression, don't say it about someone's hometown, as local people might feel offended.

Veronika: [NORMAL] Jsem z malého města, kde chcípnul pes. [SLOW] Jsem z malého města, kde chcípnul pes.
Michael: "I'm from a small town where nothing happens."

Michael: Okay, what's the last expression?
Veronika: kde je zakopaný pes
Michael: literally meaning "where the dog is buried." But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "what is the secret."
Veronika: [SLOW] kde je zakopaný pes [NORMAL] kde je zakopaný pes

Michael: Use this slang expression when you want to ask what is the secret of something, or what is the point of the whole thing.
Michael : Now let's hear an example sentence.

Michael: "Now I know what it's all about!"
Veronika: [NORMAL] Už vím, kde je zakopaný pes!
