INTRODUCTION
In the previous lesson, we covered how to get bus tickets in and outside cities. In this lesson we will continue teaching you how to say other phrases that will be helpful for your trips during your stay in Czech.
GRAMMAR POINT
Let’s imagine a situation that happens all the time in Czech bus stations. For example, you choose to travel by bus from Prague to Brno. First of all you will go to the information desk and make sure the bus schedule didn’t change. You can ask “At what time will there be a bus to Brno?” In Czech, that is:
V kolik hodin jede autobus do Brna?
(slow) V ko-lik ho-din je-de au-to-bus do Br-na?
V kolik hodin jede autobus do Brna?
The first three words v kolik hodin are translated as “at what time”.
(slow) V ko-lik ho-din.
V kolik hodin.
Next we have jede, which is a present form of the verb that means “to go”.
(slow) Je-de.
Jede.
After that comes autobus, the word for “bus”.
Do may be translated in different ways, but in our sentence it means “to”
(slow) Do.
Do.
And the last word is the name of the city. In our case - Brno.
(slow) Br-na
Brna
The whole question is:
V kolik hodin jede autobus do Brna?
In English that will be literally translated as
“At what hour is going a bus to Brno?”

The next question you will need to ask is
Kde můžu koupit jízdenky? That in English is translated as “Where can I buy tickets?”
Kde is translated as “where”
(slow) Kde.
Kde.
The word Můžu is a form of the verb that means “can”. We can translate it as “I can”
(slow) Mů-žu.
Můžu.
Koupit is a verb that means “to buy”.
(slow) Kou-pit.
Koupit.
And last we have jízdenky which means “tickets”.
(slow) Jíz-den-ky.
Jízdenky.
Let’s hear this phrase one more time.
Kde můžu koupit jízdenky?

Usually the answers for this question will be:
U řidiče or Jízdenky se kupují u řidiče.
This means “You can buy the tickets from the driver.”
The shorter expression u řidiče means “by” or “from driver”:
(slow) U ři-di-če.
U řidiče.
Now let’s pick up the longer one and break it down.
(slow) Jíz-den-ky se ku-pu-jí u ři-di-če.
Jízdenky se kupují u řidiče.
Jízdenky means “the tickets”
(slow) Jíz-den-ky.
Jízdenky.
Se kupují has no literal translation, but basically these two words mean “buy them”.
(slow) Se ku-pu-jí.
Se kupují.
And the last two words u řidiče mean “by (from) driver”.
(slow) U ři-di-če.
U řidiče.
Altogether, that’s
Jízdenky se kupují u řidiče.
In English the whole sentence is translated as “The tickets are bought from the driver”

When you get on the bus, make sure that the bus is the one you must take. For this you will need to ask, “Is this bus going to Brno?” In Czech, you can say...
Je tohle autobus do Brna?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Je toh-le au-to-bus do Br-na?
Je tohle autobus do Brna?
Je is the form of a verb which means “to be”.
Tohle is the neutral form for “this”.
Autobus means “bus”.
And the last words do Brna are translated as “to Brno”.
The whole question once again is:
Je tohle autobus do Brna?

Now let’s learn how to buy a ticket for a far destination.
Jednu jízdenku do Brna, prosím. In English, this means “A ticket to Brno please.”
(slow) Jed-nu jíz-den-ku do Br-na, pro-sím.
Jednu jízdenku do Brna, prosím.
You already know that Jednu jízdenku means “one ticket.”
Next we have do which can be translated as “to” or “in”.
Brno is the name of the city.
And at the end the word prosím, please.
The whole sentence is:
Jednu jízdenku do Brna, prosím.

When you get ready for a long trip it is normal to be interested in how many hours it will take to reach the destination. All you have to do is to ask the driver...
Jak dlouho to trvá do Brna? It means “How long does it take to Brno?”
(slow) Jak dlou-ho to tr-vá do Br-na?
Jak dlouho to trvá do Brna?
Jak dlouho means “how long”
(slow) Jak dlou-ho.
Jak dlouho.
The second word to means “it”.
(slow) To.
To.
The third word trvá is the form of a verb which means “to last” or “to take”.
(slow) Tr-vá.
Trvá.
You are already familiar with the last two words - Do Brna means “To Brno.”
All together we have: Jak dlouho to trvá do Brna?
