INTRODUCTION
In the Czech Republic, there are many delicious dishes! We've already covered how to order them, but now it’s time to learn how to eat them!
GRAMMAR POINT
When you want to say “How do you eat this?", in Czech, you can say...
Jak se tohle jí?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Jak se toh-le jí?
Once more:
Jak se tohle jí?
The first word, jak, means “how.”
(slow) Jak.
Jak.
Then we have se. This word makes the following verb into the passive form.
(slow) Se.
Se.
The next word is tohle, which means “this”
(slow) Tohle.
Tohle.
And in the end, we have jí, which means ‘to eat.’
(slow) Jí.
Jí.
The whole question once again is:
Jak se tohle jí?
It literally means “How is this eaten?”
Usually it is easy to understand how a certain Czech dish has to be eaten. But when you come across traditional meals, it might be complicated. Also, you should know that pork is very common in Czech dishes. This will make the food heavy. When you are worried about calories, here is a useful phrase for you.
To ask "Is this food very heavy?", in Czech, you can say..
Je tohle jídlo velmi těžké?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Je toh-le jíd-lo vel-mi těž-ké?
Once more:
Je tohle jídlo velmi těžké?
The first word, je, is the form of the verb “to be”.
The second word, tohle, means “this”.
Then we have the word, jídlo, which means “food”.
(slow) Jíd-lo.
Jídlo.
Next we have velmi, meaning “very” or “too”
(slow) Vel-mi.
Velmi.
And at the end, we have the word těžké which means “heavy”.
(slow) Těž-ké.
Těžké.
All together, the question for ‘Is this food too heavy?’ becomes..
(slow) Je toh-le jíd-lo vel-mi těž-ké?
Je tohle jídlo velmi těžké?
The whole phrase literally means
“Is this food very heavy?”
