Kellie: Top 25 Czech Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 21: Are you hungry? in Czech (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Czech learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Are you hungry?” In Czech this is
Martin: Máš hlad?
Kellie: The first word in the question is
Martin: máš
Kellie: meaning “you have” in English.
Martin: (Slow, by syllable) máš
Kellie: Listen again and repeat.
Martin: máš
{Pause}
Kellie: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Martin: hlad
Kellie: meaning “hunger.”
Martin: (Slow, by syllable) hlad
Kellie: Now repeat.

To say "no", in a simple way, just say:
Martin: Ne, děkuji.
Kellie: Which is like saying “No, thank you.” in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Martin: (Slowly) Ne,děkuji.
Kellie: And one more time at normal speed:
Martin: Ne, děkuji.
Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting the Czech Republic and someone asks you if you're hungry. You want to answer “Yes, I'm a little hungry”. Respond to the question.
Martin: Máš hlad? (five seconds) Ano, mám trochu hlad.
Kellie: Now you want to say Yes, I'm very hungry. Respond to the question.
Martin: Máš hlad? (five seconds) Ano, mám pořádný hlad.
Kellie: You want to say Yes, I'm extremely hungry. Answer the speaker's question.

Kellie: You want to say Yes, I'm quite hungry. Respond to the question.
Martin: Máš hlad? (five seconds) Ano, mám docela hlad.
Kellie: You want to ask someone if they are hungry. Ask the question
