Kellie: Top 25 Czech Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 5: Do you speak Czech? (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Czech learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Do you speak Czech?” In Czech this is
Martin: Mluvíš česky?
The first word in the question is
Martin: mluvíš
Kellie: meaning “you speak” in English.
Martin: (Slow, by syllable) mluvíš
Kellie: Listen again and repeat.
Martin: mluvíš
{Pause}
Kellie: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Martin: česky
Kellie: meaning Czech.
Martin: (Slow, by syllable) česky
Kellie: Now repeat.
Martin: česky

Kellie: Now repeat.

Kellie: Listen to the speaker say, “Yes, I speak a little” and then repeat.
Martin: Ano, trochu.

Kellie: To use a different phrase, replace a little with very well..
Martin: velmi dobře.
Kellie: very well.
Martin: (slow) velmi dobře. (regular) velmi dobře.
Kellie: Listen to the phrase again, this time with very well.
Martin: Ano, velmi dobře..
Kellie: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace a little. Say “Yes, I speak very well..”

Martin: Ano, velmi dobře..
Kellie: To expand on the pattern, replace very well. with but not very well.
Martin: ale ne moc dobře
Kellie: but not very well
Martin: (slow) ale ne moc dobře (regular) ale ne moc dobře
Kellie: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “but not very well”
Martin: Ano, ale ne moc dobře.
Kellie: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the phrase very well. Say “Yes, but not very well.”

Martin: Ano, ale ne moc dobře.
Kellie: To expand on the pattern, replace but not very well with quite well.
Martin: docela dobře
Kellie: quite well
Martin: (slow) docela dobře (regular) docela dobře
Kellie: Listen to the phrase again, this time with quite well
Martin: Ano, docela dobře.
Kellie: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the phrase but not very well. Say “Yes, I speak quite well.”

To say "no", in a simple way, just say:
Martin: Bohužel ne.
Kellie: Which is like saying “Sorry, I don’t.” in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Martin: (Slowly) Bohužel ne.
Kellie: And one more time at normal speed:
Martin: Bohužel ne.
Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting the Czech Republic and someone asks you if you speak Czech . You want to answer that you speak a little. Respond to the question.
Martin: Mluvíš česky? (five seconds) Ano, trochu.
Kellie: Now you want to answer that you speak very well. Respond to the question.
Martin: Mluvíš česky? (five seconds) Ano, velmi dobře..
Kellie: You want to answer that you speak it, but not very well. Answer the speaker's question.
Martin: Mluvíš česky? (five seconds) Ano, ale ne moc dobře.
Kellie: Now you want to answer that you speak quite well. Respond to the question.
Martin: Mluvíš česky? (five seconds) Ano, docela dobře.
Kellie: Now you want to ask someone if they speak Czech. Ask the question
(5 seconds)
Martin: Mluvíš česky?
